RESOURCE / TRACING
What a blockchain trace can establish
A transaction path is valuable evidence. Its meaning depends on context and the limits of the record.
Start with the transaction record
A blockchain trace examines the recorded movement of assets. Depending on the network and available information, relevant facts can include addresses, transaction identifiers, block times, token amounts and interactions with contracts. A clear report records the source of those observations.
Separate observation from inference
An observed transfer from one address to another is different from a conclusion about who owns either address. Address clustering, service labels and behavioral patterns can suggest relationships, but the basis and confidence level of those links need explanation. Custodial services can hold assets for many users.
Understand visibility gaps
Off-chain movements, private service records, bridges, mixing activity and incomplete source coverage can interrupt the visible path. A trace should state where the available record ends rather than fill gaps with an assumed destination or identity.
Connect the trace to the incident
Communications, platform records and payment confirmations can help explain why transfers occurred and which records belong to the incident. The purpose is a coherent account with a documented basis, not a diagram detached from the facts.
Use findings to inform action
A trace may help identify relevant reporting routes or questions for exchanges, counsel and authorities. It does not itself compel disclosure, freeze assets or reverse a transfer. Practical recovery options depend on the circumstances and the decisions of the relevant organizations.
